Scottish Highland Petrol Stations C1969, BP, Shell etc, F948a
A short promotional film showing the new build petrol stations appearing in different locations in the north of Scotland. I am not sure who sponsored this, possible a Scottish tourist thing. After all, lets face it, when driving miles through this beautiful landscape the presence of petrol stations must be as reassuring today as it was in the 1960s when this film was made.
This footage comes with no credits, probably because these were cut out at some point.

Ciudad Juárez, Mexico 1948, 1940s, Everyday Scenes F930d
Просмотров 613 часов назад
Some interesting 16mm colour film taken by an amateur filmmaker in 1948 of everyday scenes in the city of Juarez Mexico close to the border. This shows streets, shops, activities, and sights. It was filmed by Louis Epstein, and I believe the film processing was assisted in some way by the South African production company "Unifilms" This original 16mm Kodachrome film was digitised frame by frame...
Blackhawk films, 1942 WW2 Propaganda film, "Blitzkrieg Through Nazis Eyes", F940
Просмотров 2413 часов назад
A Nazis propaganda film from 1942, with original dubbed sound (i.e., dubbed at the time). This film was processed by Blackhawk Films some time in the 1970s I think, and is in 16mm film format with density stripe optical sound. It covers the earlier fast German advance into Western Europe, but I suspect it was published a little later...perhaps 1942/43. It is rather crude propaganda, with blatan...
SS Uruguay sailing from New York to Rio de Janeiro in June 1948, 1940s, F931a

Launched in 1927 the SS Uruguay was originally named as the SS California, and was notable as a world first for turbo-electric propulsion in a large liner. As the Uruguay her GRT was approximately 20,183. She sailed as the SS Uruguay from 1942 onwards and served a number of roles, finally being laid up in 1954, and scrapped ten years later. This 16mm amateur footage shows a cruise trip departin...
Terry Thomas and Michael Bentine, Cookery Nook, or What's Cooking, C1951, F948b
Просмотров 22213 часов назад
A short clip from what I think was the 1951 short film entitled "Cookery Nook" (28mins) which starred Philip Harben (the TV cook of the time), Terry Thomas, and Michael Bentine in his early incarnation as mad professor, and probably one of his first film appearances. Michael Bentine's war experiences are well worth a look...suffice to say he played his part. I can find very little about this fi...
Guide to New Orleans 1948, 1940s, Bridges, Ferries, Streets and Sights F930c

Amateur 16mm colour film from 1948 presented as a guide to New Orleans. This covers the Huey Long Bridge, the Algiers Ferry, Canal Street before Mardi Gras, and many sights from the French Quarter. This was filmed by Louis Epstein, and I believe Unifilms (of South Africa) may have been involved in the processing of the full reel (this is edited down from about 25mins). The original footage was ...
Greywood Miniature Railway, 1949: John Samuels 1940s, Walton Films, Sam's Garden Railway, F947
Просмотров 17121 час назад
An early Walton Films release showing the miniature railway "Greywood" built in John Samuels' back garden on the Burwood Estate at Walton on Thames in 1946. This footage is from the late 1940s when John Samuels appears to have found peace after the War organising the development of this railway in his back garden with the help of volunteers. The railway became so remarkable that by 1950 a syndi...

"Trouble on the Teifi", a story of Coracle Fisherman of Cenarth in Wales C1940s, F942
Просмотров 30321 час назад
A film about the how traditional coracle fisherman of the non-tidal region of the river Teifi near Cenarth in Wales are having to cease their way of life. Laws were introduced which forbid them from fishing using their traditional crafts, and they seem to take this in fairly good spirit. The narrator (uncredited) watches a traditional coracle being made, speaks with the villagers and fisherman ...
Ford Thunderbird Advert 1967, Extended, F946

An extended advert for the Ford Thunderbird range of 1967. I think this promo was made for sales staff rather than the public. In any case the footage promotes the many advantages of these cars...I found myself wanting one before it had finished. This may have been colour footage to start with, but the 16mm copy I was working with was very red faded, so I went for black and white. Incidentally,...
1950s Fairmont Miramar Hotel, With Fashion Parade Watched by the Stars, Santa Monica 1951, F928b

Some rare footage of the iconic Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows from 1950/51. In the middle of the last century many stars stayed at this beach front hotel...then just the Miramar I think. This amateur film was made by a couple staying in one of the on site bungalows. It gives a fly on the wall picture of poolside life back in the day. And there is a fashion parade watched by stars such as H...
Forest Railroad Park, Dobwalls Cornwall C1976, 1970s, 7.5" Narrow Gauge Railway F927

A cute film on super 8mm format of the Forest Railroad Park at Dobwalls Cornwall in about 1976. Founded in 1970 by John Southern, this park took an American theme with 7.5" gauge steam trains. This footage covers the train attractions of the day, though much more was added to the park as years progressed. This was a major attraction in Cornwall back in the day, but effectively closed in 2006. T...

Here we see the people of Newbrough (Northumberland) celebrating the Queen's Silver Jubilee of 1977. It seems most of the village has turned out for the event as far as I can gather, which I assume was held on the cricket/recreation grounds. No credits appear with this apparently amateur footage. However, the skill in photography evident here suggests that whoever did the filming was not an ama...

This was digitised frame by fra...

We moved to Southampton early in 1950 and Above Bar was a mass of bomb sites. Woolworths comprised a wooden hut set up on the bombed base of their original store and had to be reached via a wooden bridge across an exposed cellar. Gradually during the 1950s the mainly concrete buildings that are there now were erected.

When this was filmed, there were massive plans for a web of motorways around London and most towns and cities across the country. More akin to American freeways with grand junctions that would have eaten up a lot of land. Obviously it didnt take long for resistance to set in. Sadly the destruction of the once great railway network took place despite most of the replacement roads never getting built leading to the 'worst of both worlds' situation that exists up to today.

What a contrast to how this area is now. Busy roads congested with tourist visitors, Cenarth now being a tourist attraction. Many houses are now second homes or holiday lets. It is still a beautiful area to visit and progress to use that horrible word is inevitable, but I do mourn for those long gone days.

This predates my time living West of London (in Berkshire) by about 8 years. It's fascinating to see how much has changed, and how much hasn't, over the last 60-70 years. I recall the M4 being finished off in the 1970s, so we would have used a number of the old roads going into London. I figure that even the M25 wasn't being finished off until the early 1980s. I know the bits around Newbury and Hungerford like the back of my hand, and it just doesn't seem to have changed (apart from the odd bypass underneath). Even had my wedding reception in the Bear Hotel at 14:53

Most shan't know that the saying ' After you, Claude ', (which was always followed by ' No, after you, Cecil '), was from the '40's radio show ' ITMA ', (which was an abbreviation for ' It's that Man Again '). The ' Man ' was Tommy Handley. Jack Train played Claude, and Horace Percival played Cecil, who were very polite handymen.

Spent many happy hours on Bournemouth Beach and on Sandbanks in the summer. I remember my mum and auntie Val going to a Tea Dance at the Pavillion and seeing Tom Jones there in about 1967. With my mum, nanny and my sister. It was always exciting taking a trip on the trolley buses sitting upstairs in the open air. So many great memories growing up. ❤
